Soul Retrieval

Starting with this issue and continuing for the next several, I will be writing about the Shamanic healing techniques of Soul Retrieval. This article will focus on soul loss and a checklist of symptoms for you to examine. Sandra Ingerman has written an excellent book on the topic; Soul Retrieval - Mending the Fragmented Self. I will also comment on my personal experiences of having my soul loss returned to me and the many experiences I've encountered retrieving other's lost pieces of their soul.

Today many of us are coming to the realization that we are not whole. We don't feel "all together" or "all here." There is a technique in shamanism to restore the soul loss on behalf of the client. In his Soul Retrieval Training Program, Dr. Alberto Villoldo stated the soul retrieval is a major challenge and vital procedure to be performed by a western shamans. In the Inca tradition, almost anyone could do a soul retrieval, but now according to Dr. Villoldo, only shamans can perform the technique.

Soul loss is the separation from an individual and a part of their spiritual energy. The causes of soul loss are many with most people experiencing some degree of soul loss during their lifetime. Children are especially vulnerable to soul loss - or soul thievery by some adult. Some examples of soul loss are physical/sexual abuse; the perpetrator may know or may not know that his/her actions cause soul loss in another. An abusive relationship is another situation where one may lose a part of your soul. An individual who becomes seriously ill may experience soul loss an keep getting sick. Repressed, forgotten, and gaps in memories could be attributed to soul loss. The grief process is also a possible occasion to experiences soul loss. Your divorced partner may have taken a piece of your soul with them causing you to feel weak, and afraid. We have included a partial list of symptoms at the end of this article.

The goal of the Soul Retrieval is to get back to what is lost. We will begin to examine that process in the next issue of Shaman's time.
